Yet one more product that isn't available in the United States...but certainly should be. Electrolux's Sunny front loading washing machine would certainly a perfect fit for residents in our home city of Los Angeles (and the rest of the Southwest for that matter), where sunshine is available nearly year around. The washing machine heats water using a solar hot water system when sufficient sunlight is available, but can switch over to a gas-heated source when needed. Sort of like a Prius, but with improved mileage in your clothing's cleanliness.

Supposedly this dual heating system can reduce energy consumption up to 40%, no small matter over the lifetime of a washing machine's life. Sadly, as mention up top, this model is only available in Italy at the moment. 
You could just get a solar hot water heater, and get the benefit for all of your hot water. Or even easier, wash your clothes in cold water.

Buying a solar washing machine, with all the energy that goes into making it, is clearly less eco-friendly than washing in cold water.
