DIY Artwork: Frame an Everyday Object

This is way beyond dried flowers. For Artwork, Crafts & Collections Month, we've been thinking of creative, budget-friendly, and do-it-yourself ways to spruce up our walls. Here's one option: take an object and frame it! An empty frame can instantly transform seemingly anything — a bike, some cool shopping bags, or a set of vintage cameras — into a piece of art that will stand apart from the rest...

  1. Framed Objects: so, this company actually does it for you. They provide you with a framed vase, shelf or hook upon which to display your wares. This was the inspiration for our post!
  2. Shopping Bags as Art: okay, so your run-of-the-mill plastic grocery bags probably won't do the job quite as well.
  3. Framed Jewelry Display: this is a favorite. Not only is it pretty to look at, but would be totally practical! Our jewelry case is a mess.
  4. Framed Doily Grouping: can't say we've ever been a big doily fan, but this grouping — particularly framed against a black backdrop — is quite appealing.
  5. Framed Textiles: always a good idea, and very easy to do. You can use leftover fabric panels, tea towels, pillowcases, etc.
  6. Vintage Camera Grouping: Love this one. Looks so much cooler on the wall than it would just lined up on a bookshelf.
  7. Autumn Leaves Behind Glass: this will be a nice reminder of an afternoon autumn stroll.
  8. Framed Vintage Bathing Suits: hey, it's the end of summer. No need to fret over swimsuit season anymore! But if you're feeling particularly masochistic, you can look at that swimsuit all year long. (We kid, we kid.)
  9. Bike in a Frame: just another way to give your bike storage solution a little spice.
  10. Empty Frames: If all else fails, a grouping of empty frames can look pretty darn stylish.

Do you have anything you're thinking of framing?

I LOVE the bathing suits and have been wanting to do this myself for quite a while.

I recently framed some vintage bow ties... and I think they look sweet!

Here's a pic of my framed vintage bow ties: http://sparkerblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/busy-busy.html

@CambriaNYAT Thanks! I think they'd look perfect sitting atop a man's bureau or inside of his closet.

I've never seen doilies look so dramatic. I'm impressed.

I love this idea, especially the vintage cameras and swimsuits. I actually used old cd booklets to create some framed art a couple of weeks ago and it worked out great. I have a tutorial here: http://papernstitchblog.com/2009/08/26/three-minute-art-project/
