AT on... Home Through the Seasons

As I stumbled to the light of the window, half asleep, still murky, I could smell the rain outside. The wet scent, the chill hanging in the air, and the thrum of the rain on the roof made this late August morning feel like the kind of unexceptional gray day that repeats without end during late fall here in the Pacific Northwest. Overnight, the bamboo had drooped, and this morning it was pressed against the window as though trying to peek inside.

As I brewed coffee and wiped the rain off the windowsills, I realized that fall will soon be here. And at that moment, my house felt different; no longer the breezy, open place it is in summer, but rather more enclosed, a retreat from the cold and the rain.

We ask so much of our homes: to keep us warm and dry, but also to fulfill an almost spiritual need for daily rhythm. To keep us safe from harm, but also to tell others about us and what we value. And, for those of us who aim to create a green home, to do all of these things and, at the same time, to make our world just a bit more balanced.

How do your feelings about home shift throughout the year? And for those of you who are looking forward to a few more weeks of summer, how are you going to make the most of it?

We bought our first house less than 6 months ago, and just moved in 1 month ago... and no word describes how I feel besides FREEDOM!

Free to decorate how I want!
Free to laugh and carry on as loud as I want!
Free to let my three cats run around and slide all over the floors!

I'm in love!
