apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

AT on ... The Power of a Good Blanket

11-10-2009blankets.jpgLast night it was cold in my apartment. Really cold. So cold that I considered turning on the heat for the first time since last winter. But our forced-air heating blows up so much dust (especially the first time we use it), so I really want to hold off for as long as possible. Good thing I am a blanket hoarder.

Instead of turning on the heat, we made some tea, pulled a couple of fleece blankets out of the closet, and got cuddled up underneath them on the couch. I admit, my nose was a little cold at first, but after a little while I was completely toasty and had no need to turn on the heat.

We won't be able to do this all winter, especially in the mornings when we're running around trying to get ready for work. But with all the blankets I have stored away, we should be able to put off turning on the heat for at least another few weeks.

Is there anything you do to delay turning on the heat?

I bake a lot to help warm up the house. Roast chickens, casseroles, cookies, etc. Makes the house smell fantastic, and heats up the kitchen and office.

Unfortunately, the office is the coldest room in the house, and we spend the most time in it. I made draft stoppers for the windows and doors, and that makes a HUGE difference. I'm tempted to go the bubble wrap route this winter, as well.

we do this out of neccessity. short on cash so you go without. slippers are huuuuge if your doing this, especially on our all hardwood floors. there are blankets in every room and we also cuddle with our big dogs, shared body head is better with them lol. when the sun is out my shades are open but when it gets chilly all shades are shut with a heavy curtain in front of that. we leave the bathroom door open not only for ventilation but that adds extra heat. hoodies are almost always on, when using the oven which is done sparingly as well we open the door and let it seep into the rest of the house. a good pot of tea , coffee or hot chocolate always good, and we've gone old school as we dont belive in heating blankets-we got old school hot water bottles and sometimes use heated bags of beans. once we acquire bubble wrap from my grandma we are doing as many windows as possible.
