Can the Megamansion Be Green?

10_17_2008-megamansion1.jpgCan a house this huge be green? At least one person thinks so... but we're wondering what you think.

...and, not surprisingly, he's the developer of the house, and other humongous luxury properties. Although it's been built green, the utilities bill on this house alone dwarfs what many pay in rent. The point the developer makes, and which Inhabitat seems to go along with, is that some people want giant houses, so if giant houses are going to be built, they might as well be built green.

Though we've spoken out about the excess of square footage before, we're tempted by the argument. But then again, we wonder if there might be a way to push back against this kind of excess. What do you think?

Ok, the mega mansion is not, in concept, green. However, it should be the most efficient it can possibly be because of its size and the homeowner, well, they can afford it!

So wealthy homeowners should do their best to include forward thinking, green technology to forward the technologies development and reduce their footprint as much as possible. Just, well, because they can!

yea I agree with Praia, what about some solar panels on that HUGE expanse of a roof. I'm sure that roof collects to might rainwater - harvesting that might be a nice start.

Sorry I don't buy it. Just because someone can do something doesn't mean they should. Honestly, that's what being green is all about, doing things because they make sense, not because you can afford something else. And NOT because you're looking for the latest chic ecogreen status symbol.

I have enough money to buy plastic plates and utensils every day of my life and never wash a single dish. Even if I was using special bamboo recyclable plates this would be a waste. The planet cannot sustain such lavish uses of resources. Period. The people that insist on wasting them like this are killing us all, because they can. It's not until we get indignant and start passing some laws against it that things will change. Wake up y'all!

I agree with SFGail.

The developer is supporting the consuming of too much natural HABITAT of species.

It is going in the wrong direction.

Re-Nest & Inhabitat should not promote this. It is not a good "green" example. Take the higher road.
