Is It Green? Pledge Revitalizing Oil with Natural Orange Oil

6_11_2008-pledgeoil.jpgWe're pretty sure this stuff isn't green, despite the label's promise of "Natural Orange Oil." But when one of our favorite green products, OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner, couldn't do the trick, Pledge came to the rescue, handily reviving a tired wood floor in our new rental.

We were pretty sure the floor needed to be refinished, but this stuff worked wonders. (We disregarded the advice about not using it on floors—they were slippery for a day or two, but then it soaked in.)

So here's the paradox: we're pretty sure the orange oil is the only natural thing in this stuff; it's got the kind of aggressive fake citrus fragrance that's used to mask all sorts of nasty odors. But instead of the dust and offgassing of a new finish, the Pledge Orange Oil gave us a floor that looks decent... and with minimum of labor. So we're wondering: can it be green to use a few chemicals every now and then, especially if they help to extend the life of things?

Stay tuned for the dramatic before-and-after photos...

I'd try to limit the use of it as much as possible, I'm thinking that there are other less toxic solutions to your floor needs.

Have you tried olive oil? You'll probably have the slippery floor thing going on for a few days, but it will eventually subside. I have to say that I tried olive oil on my rentals hardwood floors when we accidentally scratched it with our furniture. I rubbed it in and was amazed to see how well it "erased" the scratch. The scratch must have been mostly superficial (or just a slight groove at most) because I can't imagine that this solution would work for floors with more damage.

I also really like Murphy's.

I've heard that Pledge contains silicone so be careful. My mom recently had her walls painted and she noticed these spots behind her side table that didn't get covered. It was the spray from her Pledge and they had to sand it off and then re-paint.
