Dell's Studio Hybrid Desktop

8-5-2008hybrid.jpg

We blogged about Dell's new eco-desktop not too long, but that was before it was actually available for purchase.

Now, we can't honestly say that we're considering buying one of Dell's new Studio Hybrids. We're on the verge of needing a new computer -- but, practically, we can't buy anything other than a laptop.

Still, if we were in the market for a desktop, this one has a lot going for it.

Dell's Studio Hybrid Desktop (starting at $499) is super small, which means it can fit in the tightest of spaces; you can buy it with a bamboo cover, but you don't have to -- there are also six other color options; and -- the kicker -- it uses about 70% less energy than your typical desktop computer.

There are a few other green specs that you can check out here.

What do you think? When you buy your next computer, will it be a green one?

Ok, I'm going out on a limb here, but do computers actually use a lot of energy? I wonder if it might be better to invest the money elsewhere--like buying a much better fridge or dishwasher, which I do think use a lot of energy. Or those new LCD lightbulbs? I'm wondering if anyone has any statistics about this?

Computers may not be as energy intensive as some appliances, but sadly, some folks and a lot of businesses leave them on 24/7, often for remote-desktop connectivity.

According to this article on NPR, "In U.S. companies alone, more than $1 billion a year is wasted on electricity for computer monitors that are turned on when they shouldn't be."

I think getting businesses to purchase reduced power servers & desktops would go along way. I work for a University and all new or upgraded desktops are to be low energy models.

I'm glad it uses less power, but I have a big problem with Dell computers. Plus, if the box is so small, then you cannot add to your hard drive, memory, ect as much as a larger tower, so the only difference between this and a laptop is that you have to buy an energy-guzzling screen on top of it

Hollie, I think that as long as it has a s***load of USB ports, size really is not an issue.
