Skullcandy Holua Wooden Earbuds: Let Everyone Know You're Green

020509_rg_skullcandyholua_01.jpgThere are no two ways about it. Wood is good. Using this sustainable material makes everything look good, from USB flash drives to laptops. It's just a shame that there aren't more products out there made out of wood. Wooden earphones are pretty cool. It's not that we like getting splinters in our ears, but wood definitely feels better than some plastic, no matter how gooey it is.

020509_rg_skullcandyholua_02.jpgPutting wood on a gadget also gives it some class. It makes it look more expensive than it actually is, and makes it a pleasure to hold. Naturally, these gadgets don't actually perform that much better than their plastic counterparts, but for us, it's just a pleasure to see wood used. These wooden earbuds look a lot more fashionable than the last ones we featured. They are also widely available through Urban Outfitters and other electronics stores.

These great looking Holua Skullcandy earbuds are for people going for a more natural look. Skullcandy earphones and earbuds are usually pretty remarkable in the fact that they will attract the eye. These wooden ones are no different. However, all this wood doesn't come cheap. You'll have to shell out almost $100 to get these. That's a $50 premium over their other similar models. However, if you love green gadgets and love the laser engravings on these 'buds, then these are the wooden earphones for you. [via DVice]

I'd never spend so much on a set of headphones. I make a point never to spend over twenty, and try and keep it under ten usually.

That's mostly because this is not an uncommon thing in my household- I'm sitting on the sofa at night, listening to music on my headphones (I use them late at night in my apartment because I don't want a chance of disturbing the neighbors). Then my parrot, who is sitting nearby, decides I'm not paying enough attention to her, so she comes over and bites right through the wires. I've lost many a pair of headphones to parrot attrition.

Skullcandy is a nice brand though. I picked up a pair really cheap on clearance once and enjoyed them for a good while before they met parrot death.

This item is not about sustainability. It's a pure luxury item. I don't think replacing a thimbleful of plastic with wood on an item that has a production line of a few thousand makes an ounce of a difference environmentally. Plus, packaging in a wooden box with a big plastic lid that just gets thrown away is wasteful IMO. It is environmentally a lot more sustainable to use a box made from recycled cardboard instead.

"let everyone know you're green"

ooh, that's the kind of trendy, self-congratulatory 'green-ness' that is a turn off for so many people.

I prefer to save wood for things I'm going to use for many, many years to come. though the wood casings are attractive, the electronic component will eventually fail and the wood will be thrown away. and how much wood is wasted whittling down those precious little shapes? sometimes, regretfully, plastic just might be better.

They look cool, but I would never spend that much for earbuds. I would feel really, really guilty about wasting our hard-earned money on something so frivolous. (But, hey, if YOU have the money, go for it. I'm not judging.) I agree with foodefafa, though, about what a turn-off it is when people go out of their way to show how green they are. Blech.
