Outdoor Living Room Made from Salvage
The Oregonian: 08.05.09

8-5-09-outdoor-salvage.jpg

Finally! We've often wondered if the extravagant "outdoor living room" concept could be done on a non-extravagant budget, or at least look nice but not as fussy as the slick magazine spreads on the topic. Portland homeowners Richard Rolfe and Stephen Rutledge have accomplished just that with what they call their "fort," cobbled together from local salvage...

Look! Garage Door Headboard

8-3-09-Door-headboard.jpg

While perusing Canadian House and Home, we found a how-to for a very involved (for us) DIY headboard project. The instructions called for creating a frame out of two-by-fours and attaching plywood, resulting in a tall, door-like headboard. Being the carpentry-phobes we are, we thought, "how about using an old door and cutting out the middle man?" We're not the first to think of it...

Look! Old Croquet Cart Transformed into Yardwork Caddy

7-29-09-croquet.JPG

Proving that there are many folks far more resourceful than ourselves, The Oregonian featured this handy way to reuse an old croquet cart, for which the actual croquet set had long been missing pieces...

Homemade Carpet Freshener

We have a cat, whose adorable gray fur comes off of her body with not-so-adorable dander and allergens on a very regular basis. We sweep and vacuum, which usually does the trick, but with lavender season upon us and the herb popping up all over farmers markets, we thought we'd try this homemade vacuuming powder using it...

Look! Wine Rack Made of FedEx Tubes

7-2-09-fedex-wine-rack.jpg

Ah yes, we can certainly appreciate impromptu, but correct and recyclable wine storage. Putting one together on the spot would be a great ice-breaker at a party to hold everyone's wine contributions, but then again, an intimate get-together with that amount of wine may not have much ice to break...

Dwelling Shed by Modern Shed in Port Townsend
Seattle

You might be familiar with Modern Shed, a Seattle-based company and flat-pak prefab structure of the same name. While the Modern Shed has insulated walls and pre-drilled wall chases for running computer connections, suggesting use as a detached office or living space, it's not really equipped for living in, no matter how tempting. But the Dwelling Shed is a different story, as the name suggests...

Etsy Find: Writing Slates

Just when we thought we had exhausted every imaginable possibility for chalkboard paint, we came across this idea from Vancouver, B.C. based Etsy seller blissinateacup...

Top 10 Flea Market Finds
Canadian House & Home

5-22-09-flea-market.jpg

This is just the kind of list we're always putting together in our head, but Canadian House & Home beat us to actually writing it down. There are a few things we always beeline for in the thrift store; let's see how our favorites stack up...

How To: Make Cereal Box Storage Bins

5-12-09-cereal-box.jpg

Storage bins are such a basic organizing tool that it just makes sense to, first of all, make them ourselves; and, second of all, use one of the most common sources of household cardboard to do so. We see great cereal-box reuse projects come through every once in awhile, and this is a great one to add to the arsenal....

Look! A Tricked-Out Treehouse

4-29-09-treehouse.jpg

Many of us likely associate tree houses with childhood fantasies. Still others never gave up the dream. This tree house built by a team of builders and designers at The TreeHouse Workshop is a retreat suitable for grown folks...

Gallery of Salvage Makeovers
Sunset: 04.20.09

4-20-09-sunset-all-1.jpg

Often, remaking something old is the most accessible way to have anything new to look at in our house. The new issue of Sunset features a gallery of home items that have been refreshed — and in some cases completely transformed  — for Spring.

How To: Make a Tire Trug

4-17-09-tire-trug-1.jpg

CRAFT recently featured this how-to from Instructables for a handy, durable garden basket made from an old tire. The project results in a sturdy carrier whose contrasting, asymmetrical handle makes it cheery and, dare we say, hip.

Reclaimed and Recycled Kitchen Items at VivaTerra

It's no secret that we turn to VivaTerra for earthy-modern home furnishings and accents — they do practical without looking plastic. The shop has some new offerings to add a rustic touch to the mix. We're particularly enamored of the wine barrel side table for a small kitchen garden, and the entwined root wine rack.

Look! Swing-Arm Lamp as Planter

3-10-09-lamp-planter.jpg

This vase by Marc Ligos was born out of a workshop by Surtido, an organization promoting up and coming Spanish designers. While this is a ceramic piece attached to the desk lamp arm, it gives us an idea for creative reuse of the real thing.

RBW Core House by Nonya Grenader Architects

3-5-09-corehouse.jpg

RBW Core House is a project undertaken by Nonya Grenader and students in Rice University's Building Workshop program, where Grenader is a professor. The goal of the project was to update and maximize space in a 500 square-foot shotgun-style rowhouse by inserting a new "core" — bath, kitchen and mechanical components.
