Austin Furniture Collection by DucDuc

2007.06.25.nursery.ducduc.austinbed.jpg

Stylish and storage-minded, we are impressed with DucDuc's Austin line of furniture for kid's rooms. While we saw a sneak peak at the Arch Digest Show, nothing beats seeing the whole line.

Above, the Austin Bed. Made of 100% sustainably harvested hardwoods, this bed accommodates 4 storage cubbies underneath it, or a trundle, if you don't need the extra drawers. The whole line comes in a range of colors and wood finishes, which serve as a foil for the white. $1,345.00. More from the Austin line, below.

Green Clean

2007.04.11.nursery.greenthiscover.jpgWe are suckers for home keeping books, and while some come and go from our bookshelves, others have real staying power.

Green Clean: The Environmentally Sound Guide to Cleaning Your Home, written by Linda Mason Hunter and Mikki Halpin and published in 2005 is one of those books. We ran across our copy during one of our Cure steps, and this is not a book for the outbox!

According to Hunter, “There are more than 100,000 chemicals used in commercial cleaning products, and only a small amount have been tested for long-term effects on your health.” This doesn't sound like a great environment for a baby....or for us!

Mad Mats

2007.07.26.nursery.mad.mats.jpg

We have gone mad! Mad Mats, that is. Six different patterns altogether, ranging in size from 4'x6 to 5'x9', and in price from $32-$85.00. Cheap, cheap, cheap. But even better? These lovely rugs are woven from recycled plastic - 100% recycled polypropylene, to be exact.

Thames and Kosmos Power House Kit

2007.09.25.nursery.powerhousekit1.jpg

Bringing green concepts to life can be very difficult to do with kids. They don't drive, they don't shop, and they likely are not making a lot of your home's design decisions, so why not give them a home of their own to make clear the challenges and rewards of green living? The Solar Power House Kit by Thames and Kosmos lets kids build a model house complete with solar panels, windmill, greenhouse, and desalination system, among other things. Check out the full kit, below.

Look!: Swap-O-Rama-Rama

2007.09.26.nursery.swaporama2.jpg

It started as an event designed to be an alternative to consumerism, but Wendy Tremayne's Swap-O-Rama-Rama now takes place in more than 40 cities both in the US and around the world - that is a photo from a recent Boston swap, above. Part clothing swap, and part DIY workshop, we cannot imagine a better idea for recycling clothes. The premise is so simple...

Wild Things: Recycled Sweater Stuffed Animals

2007.07.19.nursery.wild.things.recycled.sweater.animals.jpg

A bit of clever recycling here: Wild Things are knit out of wool recycled from old sweaters. Their sweet faces and soft bodies are great for little kids to snuggle up with, and we love the idea of sweater wool being reused. These woolly friends are handknit by a New England handicapped artist collective.

Wrap-N-Mat

2007.07.24.nursery.wrap.and.mat.jpg

Your lunch box is green...but what about the stuff inside your lunch box? Millions of sandwiches a year get packed in disposable plastic baggies, and we would be willing to bet that not of all of those get carried home, washed, and reused. So how do you carry sandwiches if you don't put them in a sandwich bag? One solution is the Wrap-N-Mat. It is both a reusable sandwich wrap, and also a clever lunch place mat, all in one.

Recycled Teddy Bears

2007.08.07.nursery.recycled.teddy.bear.jpgReduce, Reuse, Recycle. It is a mantra we agree with, especially when it comes to children's toys, and one look at the Recycled Teddy Bear from Biome Lifestyle tells us that we are not alone.

Each bear is unique, made of fabrics sourced from resale shops and then sewn by hand into these very sweet teddy bears. No two are alike! Of course, we have seen the concept of recycling old clothes into teddy bears before, but these bears from Biome Lifestyle have a unique twist to them.

Matchstick Garden Set

2007.06.29.nursery.matchstick.garden.jpg

It is all about scale. Matchbook Gardens may look like regular matchbooks, but inside they have a very green secret. Rip out a 'match', stick in the ground, and in about a week up pops either an herb or wildflower plant. An entire garden, the size of a matchbook.

Radio Flyer Earth Wagons

2007.07.31.nursery.green.radio.flyer.jpg

Its a classic, with a very green twist. The Earth Wagon is a genuine Radio Flyer, but the entire body of the wagon is made from 100% recycled post-consumer HDPE (AKA plastic milk jugs). More than 230 milk jugs go into making the body of each wagon.

Bat House Kit

2007.07.12.nursery.bathouse3.jpg Every evening, like clockwork, the moment that the sun sets over the horizon and the sky is streaked with deep pinks, oranges, and the start of the navy blue night, dozens of bats start swooping and diving in the tree-tops outside of our apartment windows.

They come from hidden corners in the eaves of buildings, and increasingly, from the Bat Houses installed on more and more of our neighborhood's apartment buildings. Nature's best mosquito repellent, brown bats eat hundreds of mosquitoes and mosquito-sized insects an hour, and their dwindling population can mean a population explosion in the insect world. Since we are not comfortable using insect repellent on kids, we are embracing a more natural method of insecticide!

Organic Crib Mattress

2007-01-24.organicmattress1.jpgIt is easy to overlook a crib mattress. They don't add to the style of your nursery, and for the most part are covered by great baby linens. But if you are thinking about making your world a little greener, your crib mattress might not be a bad place to start.
