Adam Neale and Megan Freitas' Dream House
San Francisco Chronicle

12-15-08 chron1.jpgAdam Neale and Megan Freitas' Inverness home is a mix of modernism and Bernard Maybeck's Arts and Crafts-era building style. Chronicle design editor Zahid Sardar calls it "sensible" and even goes so far as to say that "it could well be used as a template for other homes in the West"...

Benjamin Moore Natura Paint: In the Test Lab

11-25-08 natura1.jpgProduct: Benjamin Moore Natura Paint
Source: Gray's Paint & Wallpaper
Price: Approx. $15.99/quart
Rating: Strong Recommend*

Nutshell Review: Love it!

Full Review: Since moving into our new home, we've used Benjamin Moore's new zero-VOC primer and paint on both our walls and our floors. We love it and doubt we'll ever use anything else again. There's no odor at all, and it goes on smoothly and covers well -- and it dries in about an hour.

Batles' Potrero Hill Home Echoes the Past
San Francisco Chronicle: 11.26.08

11-26-08 chron1.jpgSculptor/artist Agelio Batle lives with his wife and two sons in a live-work space on Potrero Hill. It's a two-story home that was originally a Victorian, but had been altered over the years. After working with architects Ned White and Derek Paprocki, the result is "industrial meets domestic" -- with green touches such as cork floors, passive solar heating, water-based paints, and a fantastic kitchen cabinet made of salvaged pieces.

Baobab Cat Climbing Tree from Square Cat Habitat

10-28-baobab1.jpgPet Design Month may have come and gone, but that doesn't mean that well-designed pet products escape our notice. We like the modern look of Square Cat Habitat's new Baobab climbing tree for cats.

Benjamin Moore Natura Paint

10-21-natura.jpgThe other day we went in search of an eco-friendly paint for our new home. We actually walked out with something brand-new -- Benjamin Moore's zero-VOC paint, Natura. In fact, the paint is so new that it's only available in California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas.

Good Questions: Handwashing or Drycleaning Silks and Cashmere?

10-14-handwash.jpgAT:SF, I recently read somewhere that handwashing silks and cashmere is better than drycleaning. Do you guys do this? If yes, do you use any special soap for it?

Hemp Striped Dog Bed from Harry Barker

9-16-harry barker1.jpgEvery so often we debate trading up from our dog's neutral-colored donut bed (yawn), but it wasn't until we saw Harry Barker's Hemp Striped Dog Bed that we seriously moved "dog bed" up further on our priority list. Not only do we love the ticking fabric...

Good Questions: D'MAND Hot Water System?

8-25-dmand.jpgHello AT,

One of the features of the much-debated Margarido House is the D'MAND hot water system. It's basically a water pump that circulates or flushes your hot water line when you need hot water. The water that was in the hot water line is then pushed back into the hot water furnace to be reheated. This saves the water that would have gone down the sewer if you just let the water run until it is hot. In my house the second bathroom can have a wait of 3 minutes in the morning for the water to be hot, so that's quite a bit of water. I'm interested to know if anyone has firsthand experience with this device.

Thanks!

There's Platinum in the Hills
S.F. Chronicle: 08.16.08

8-18-chron.jpgThe Margarido House has been in the news a lot lately. It's no wonder -- it's virtually certain that the 4,600-square foot Oakland home will be the first in Northern California to win the LEED-H Platinum rating.

Essential Oil Knowledge for Cat Owners

7-31-cats.jpgWe started looking for natural remedies to our cats' problems, including fleas, allergies and mood swings, after realizing that our kitties were very sensitive to some of the chemical treatments we had been given at the vet. As soon as we opened a tube of Advantage, even if it was in another room, our cat P. Kitty would be nowhere in sight. But while researching holistic pet products, we learned that not all natural remedies, even those that are safe and beneficial for humans and other animals, are good for cats. Essential oils, for example, are very harmful to our furry feline friends.
