How To: Recycle Our Christmas Tree?

1-2-tree.jpg

This Christmas we were inspired to do something useful with our Christmas tree - something we'd never done before as it has always been put on the curbside or, sometimes, brought to the local Christmas tree donation drop-off for chipping (which is pretty good). But we wanted to see if we could do something MORE creative, crafty even, so we embarked on the following odyssey....

Thanks to all of you who sent in nominations for this year's best Green Design Blog. We received 11 very good nominations and whittled the field down to six based on your comments and a few other factors including how often they posted, if they were a standalone blog, how new long they'd been around and/or how closely they spoke to green design as a category (yours didn't make it this year? There's always next year). You can check out all the nominations below the jump and then vote on your favorite of the top six here. Voting closes next Tuesday at 8pm Eastern. Nominations here. The Homies: What Are the Best Home Blogs of 2008?

12-20-homies1.jpgThere's awards for all sorts of blogs, but no one ever pays enough attention to the home blogs, so we're starting a little impromptu reader nominated and voted awards ceremony this year, and we're calling it The Homies. There are five categories and none of our five blogs is eligible (we're hosting). The prizes? $100 to the winner of each category and lots of traffic as we publish the five winners in a big congratulatory post across our network on January 6th. We want to elevate good home blogs, see who you love and gain awareness for the home niche.

Kohler's Cabochon Powder Room by Jamie Drake

1008kohler.jpg

As we move to the end of our annual Fall Colors Contest on Apartment Therapy, who better to feature than color expert Jamie Drake? The renowned interior designer created this bathroom for the Kohler Design Center in Wisconsin using products from the KOHLER Purist® line and the Moxie™ sink. In addition to the color cred behind this bathroom, there are also a few green features. Click below to see how Drake used color, a few small space solutions, and water-saving fixtures to transform this narrow bath into a glamorous (and green) powder room...

Editor's Note: Political Ads on Re-Nest?!$#%@&

Dear Readers,

Today is a very hot day for political ads everywhere, and we are seeing a lot of groups trying to place them through our Google Ad Network, which is self service. While we respect the political viewpoints of others and have our own, we do not believe in supporting political ads on our sites, and have been working hard to keep up with the Google ad buys and block those that are political in any way...

VivaTerra: Eco Living Style

9-21-vivaterra.jpgI used to think that VivaTerra was a bit cheesy and uninteresting, but lately they've changed my mind. Just today at the office, I found myself thumbing through the new catalog and being really impressed. Besides being committed to "living in harmony with nature - for a healthier life now and for future generations," they've got some really beautiful home products and a much more varied collection than I've see before. So, for today's email, I thought I'd offer you peek at some of their stuff. While the web is pretty good for looking at it, their catalog is much nicer.

Could Viva Terra be a new contender and the death of Pottery Barn? Only time will tell...

Look!: Composting Diapers, Food and Leaves

9-9-compost1.jpg

This may not make for savory lunch fare, but it should, because this is all about how there's a lot of stuff that we use that doesn't need to become "trash" and can become "food" for the earth (and us, in the long run). These pics are of our big outdoor composter out at our family's place on Long Island. We bought the tumbler barrel type so that it was easy to turn and big enough to take a whole season's worth of kitchen scraps and diapers...

Sexy Eco Landscaping: Bernard Trainor, Mark Word...
New York Times 8.21.08

Finally. In this great article, we're starting to see where sustainability is evolving with beautiful aesthetic - form and function are starting to work together: "Over the past five years, as climate change has become more obvious and energy costs have spiraled up, a number of designers have begun to champion an approach to landscaping that marries traditional environmental concerns — sustainability, biodiversity, restoration, conservation — with a sensitivity to aesthetics and a flexibility that they said was missing from green-gardening crusades of the past."

There are already over 200 farmers on the site offering specialty cuts of meat, fruits, vegetables, flowers, honey, dairy products and even goat's milk soap. It's an online farmer's market!

Green @ Home: Jane's Indoor Composting & Ylang Ylang

7-30-janegreen.jpg
This photo is at the holiday party at work- all businesses are trying to Green now and it's on everyone's mind- how can we 'green' and still stay ahead economically? Also- the dress I'm wearing is hand made and was bought at the farmers market in New Orleans.

Green Move #1: the new carbon filter compost pail is affordable and you can keep matter for composting for a week without it smelling up your kitchen. If you live in queens, like me, it's not easy to get to a compost and my apartment is small and will get smelly fast...
