Greener Lifestyle With Baby

2007-07-23-lotteklaverWe conducted an honest assessment of our own lifestyle this past weekend to determine how green we really are.

No impact man, we are not. But as it turns out, we've made significant lifestyle changes that have a greening effect because of baby.

So much of the discourse focuses on how having a child can negatively impact the environment (e.g., disposable diapers and wipes), but the story doesn't just end there.

We came up with some lifestyle decisions we made because of baby that turned out to be green as well. For instance...

  • We moved closer in to the city and our respective offices, cutting down on our commute time so we can spend more time with baby, but it also means less driving.
  • We got rid of one car.
  • We walk everywhere - work, coffee, groceries, gym. The stroller is a great vehicle to haul watermelons home.
  • We eat seasonally and locally more with baby in our lives.
  • We use air conditioning less. Instead, we throw open windows when the DC-heat is not too oppressive to get fresh air in the house.
  • We use less chemicals and clean green.
  • We've unplugged lots of gadgets and appliances that we don't use regularly in order to babyproof, but we're saving energy too!
  • So what about you? Did you pass on your maternity clothes? Are you more eco-conscious about the foods, products and services you purchase? Please share greener changes, both conscious and unintended, you've made in your lifestyle since having baby.

We got lots of second-hand furniture. There are a few things that really should be new (car seat and mattress are two). Most everything else is fine second hand. Our neighborhood has a Yahoo group for parents that has tons of stuff available.

We are also taking the opportunity to detox our apartment. We're going to try seventh generation non-chlorine diapers as we didn't think cloth was going to be practical for us.

I've found that using ceiling fans allows us to leave our A/C on low when we need it.

On food, we're planning on skipping baby food and having the baby eat a mashed version of whatever we eat.

We have been using the seventh generation line (wipes and detergent - the diapers leaked too much) and tried to use g diapers (flushable) when at home and until they started top clog the toliet...wish there was some more options for diapers. Cloth seems like too much and daycare wont do those.

I planted a great garden this year and between that and the local organic market I have made all of our baby's food - its really easy and fun to cook for her already. I cook for a few hours and freeze in icecube trays and am set for a few weeks.

We also made a concious effort to not buy all the toys and things that lots of parents will tell you you have to have (which all tend to be huge and made of plastic too) Some of those toys seem way too overstimulating let alone way too plastic!
