Keetsa Mattresses

9-12-2007keetsa_ladywithbox.jpgWalking to a meeting in San Francisco last week we noticed the Keetsa Mattress store. Curiosity and Susie's question about foam mattresses compelled us to take a look around.

We didn't know what to expect ... and, 15 minutes later, we walked out seriously impressed.

If all the information in the store and on the web site is accurate, the Keetsa mattress is the greenest we've found.

• Unlike -- well, unlike any other mattress we've ever heard of -- the Keetsa mattress is compressed and rolled into a carton made of recycled cardboard. That means more mattresses can fit in a truck, which means fewer trucks.

• Much of the materials used in the Keetsa mattress are recycled and recyclable. Keetsa even has a Keetsa Quotient, which tells you how recycled/recyclable your mattress is.

• And, according to the salesperson we chatted with, because of the compression that the mattresses go through, most of the toxic off-gassing happens before the mattress enters your home. (Yes, it still happens somewhere, which is still not good.)

They're are also very reasonably priced (and shipping is free!). A queen-sized Keetsa Plus is $499.

We won't be needing a mattress for some time (Keetsa also sells pillows and bedding) but when we do ...

Wow--I am in the market for a mattress right now, and I had not heard of this at all! It is certainly reasonably priced compared to normal and organic mattresses, especially considering the memory foam.

They don't use the word "organic" on their website, though. What do people think about the green health benefits of this vs. the organic latex/organic cotton covered mattresses? One I'm looking at is at Furnature, here in Boston: http://www.furnature.com/natural-rubber.html

The GreenSleep at Furnature looks like a great find also.

One thing, I should have mentioned in this post: Starting next month, Keetsa is going to be covering their mattresses in a bamboo fabric. I don't know if that would affect your decision .. but it is a cool thing to note.

Good luck shopping!

Buyer beware! I would approach their claims with a great deal of skepticism.

Nowhere on the site or in their literature does the company disclose their products' country of origin. A representative at Dwell On Design confirmed it was China.

Transportation impacts should figure into your purchase, especially since they claim a factory-direct business model. Not to mention the product safety and environmental concerns involved with sourcing from China.

Their marketing materials are slickly green, almost preposterously so... green tea in a mattress? Huh? Are we supposed to chew the foam? What, in fact, is the foam made from? I doubt that it is natural latex.

I would like to see this company post a straightforward description of the manufacturing process without all the greenwashing and obfuscation.

Is this product any different from Wal-mart's mattress-in-a-box?

You know, latex isn't all that environmentally friendly. Have you BEEN to the factories that process latex? They are not eco-friendly at all. Latex is perceived only by the public as "eco-friendly" but if you get into it, it's nowhere close to the all the eco-friendliness of a Keetsa mattress. I don't even work there anymore but this is just from my experience. Latex is basically rubber out of tree crap. It's gotta be processed and think about when you burn rubber, is that good for the environment? Latex is an over-priced over-marketed rubber.

So what about the actual mattress? Sleeping on a padding of banana leaves is Green but is it comfortable and supportive?

Green mattress? What exactly does a green mattress mean? I suppose I should pay a visit to that store too, I want to know more about these products.

I reeeeaaalllly wanted them to be green

but no, SUPERGREEN washed ---

if you want their products you can get them for almost 1/2 the cost at Walmart.com, also a few of the products can be found at HeartlandAmerica.com. (all of my price quotes are based on a queen size) also "whypaymoreshoppe" seller on eBay has excellent prices.

Keetsa's 10" Cloud = $1044.00
Walmart's 10"" Aerus Natural Memory Foam Mattress =$529.88
Heartland's Theratouch Memory Mattress =$424.94
"whypaymoreshoppe" Classic 10" = $459.99 (free shipping)

Keetsa's contour pillow $69.99
Walmart's Eco-Friendly Memory Foam Contour Pillow $27.88

Keetsa's metal bedframe: $229.99
Bedzine (same owner as Keetsa) metal bedframe $174.99
Heartland's Smartbase frame: $109.98 (incl. shipping)
Walmart's Smartbase frame: $99.99

Facts:

Keetsa's products are made a manufacture in China, Zinus (yes they have an office in Pleasanton). Zinus holds the patent on "Mattress-in-a-box".

Keetsa is not a mattress company - they are a marketing company.

Many vendors carry the 'non green tea' mattress-in-a-box if you don't want to pay $$$$ for literal green washing. (search "mattress-in-a-box)

If you use a mattress, pad and sheets --- and wash them, you don't need the green tea to 'freshen' your mattress.

If Keetsa were truly concerned about the environment and their customers health they would post the chemical material declaration sheet of the mattress, as well as the VOC testing results.

Keetsa does not give you your $$ back if you are unhappy - just a store credit MINUS 15% and $100 mattress disposal charge????

Keetsa's owner also sells non green tea mattress (and the metal frame) for much less than at Keetsa on a site call Bedzine.com, if you want to give your business to an icky marketing genius...shall we call her Dr. Evil?

Why did I do all of this research? I hate being lied to --- and I think it is gross that companies like Keetsa are taking advantage of consumers trying to make a more healthy choice.

For budget natural latex (read truly non-toxic) check out:

Organicgrace.com ($975, and they are in Garberville)
Livefortomorrow.com ($899, certified organic/natural)

More expensive organic and natural latex:

TheNaturalSleepstore.com
AHappyPlanet.com (they are on Irving Street)
Eco-Terric.com (they are based in Montana, but have a store on Polk)
Flobeds.com (Fort Bragg)
SavvyRest.com (very high customer service rating)
MyFoam.com (SF and San Rafael)
SleepWorks.com (Berkeley)
GreenFusioDesigncenter... (San Anselmo)

SUPERGREEN WASHING!
SUPERGREEN washed ---

if you want this toxic product for 1/2 the cost - Walmart (dot com), also a few of the products can be found at HeartlandAmerica. (all of my price quotes are based on a queen size) also "whypaymoreshoppe" seller on eBay has excellent prices (I am not affiliated)

Keetsa's 10" Cloud = $949.00 queen

Walmart's 10"" Aerus Natural Memory Foam Mattress =$529.88 - Not produced by Zinus.
Heartland's Theratouch Memory Mattress =$424.94 - Not produced by Zinus.
"whypaymoreshoppe" Classic 10" = $459.99 (free shipping) - Not produced by Zinus.

Keetsa's contour pillow $69.99
Walmart's Eco-Friendly Memory Foam Contour Pillow $27.88 - Not produced by Zinus.

Keetsa's metal bedframe: $229.99
Bedzine (same owner as Keetsa) metal bedframe $174.99 - This does not include the shipping cost, which is added on when customer is checking out.
Heartland's Smartbase frame: $109.98 (incl. shipping)
- Has different structure and lower quality specifications.
Walmart's Smartbase frame: $99.99 - Has different structure and lower quality specifications.

Facts:
Keetsa's products are made a manufacture in China, Zinus (yes they have an office in Pleasanton). Zinus holds the patent on "Mattress-in-a-box". - Zinus is our supplier in China.

Keetsa is not a mattress company - they are a marketing company. - Not true. We are registered as importer, retailer and wholesaler for mattress business.

Many vendors carry the 'non green tea' mattress-in-a-box if you don't want to pay $$$$ for literal green washing. (search "mattress-in-a-box) - Keetsa carries unique products with Green Tea/Cedar oil in the foam and natural fabrications treated with natural Silver for antimicrobial. Keetsa also has just introduced a new bio foam that consists of 12% Castor Bean Oil with no detected VOC's, and is introducing a natural latex mattress by year's end. Keetsa continues to innovate great new green products.

If you use a mattress, pad and sheets --- and wash them, you don't need the green tea to 'freshen' your mattress. - Green tea extract is embedded in the foam, in the foaming process. It is impossible to have a foam in green tea or any other water based element, to maintain its resilience. Mattress inner foam spring, and the outer cover cannot be washed. Washing mattress pad and sheets is not enough to keep the mattress clean.

If Keetsa were truly concerned about the environment and their customers health they would post the chemical material declaration sheet of the mattress, as well as the VOC testing results. Any customer can come into our stores and ask for a VOC report.

Keetsa does not give you your $$ back if you are unhappy - just a store credit MINUS 15% and $100 mattress disposal charge???? - There is no store credit. All refundable amounts are credited to the customer's credit cards. To keep our product retail prices low, we do not build customer return costs in the prices. We do not resell returned mattresses, so there is $100 mattress recycling fee that we ask our customers to pay. Again, these prices are not built into our retail prices, because we don't agree that one happy customer should be paying a part of the return cost of an unhappy customer.

Keetsa's owner also sells non green tea mattress (and the metal frame) for much less than at Keetsa on a site call Bedzine.com - Bedzine.com is operated with shipping cost charged separately, where as Keetsa.com products are offered at "free shipping".

Why did I do all of this research? I hate being lied to --- and I think it is gross that companies like Keetsa are taking advantage of consumers trying to make a more healthy choice. - Most of claims made above and products compared are not valid.

Please keep in mind that we continue to strive to find new and inventive ways to improve our products and services. Thank you for your continued support of Keetsa! If anyone has any questions we will soon be posting this information on our website. You can also direct them to our certification from CoOp America.

You know, anything that a company tries to be green is usually better than companies that use thousands of trucks to haul their mattress.

Point taken but I think Keetsa is not simply marketing, it's great for the environment over other traditional mattress retailers. (I bet those weird comments are from people working at Sealy or wherever)

Oh come on - dont be bamboozled by these guys. Keetsa is a ridiculous notion in ecofriendly mattress making - but more importantly a ridiculous notion in what is healthy for you to sleep on.

They cant hide from the fact that they use 90% petrochemical polyurathane foam in their mattresses - I dont care if they add tea leaves, castor oil or magical ecofriendly powder - its not ecofriendly - its not natural - and its not healthy - no matter what they say.

Keetsa mattresses are made in China with nearly 90% petrochemicals that are incredibly unhealthy no matter what else they use or dont use. You can find waaay better options out there that are locally made in the USA with local natural ingredients like organic cotton, 100% natural latex and local organic wool for natural fire-retardancy. People should read in-between the lines Keetsa dishes out and blogs and reblogs and reblogs about.

And they arent even comfortable according to many - get this comment I pulled down: "you SINK in this damn Keetsa mattress as the toxins surround your body at night - you cant move - you feel trapped in the damn body impression mold it makes of you!!! Yikes! Even if you want to move your arms or legs, you cant - you have to lift them up and move them over. I actually found it scary and had nightmares because I couldnt move out of my own body mold. I thought maybe I'd get use to it after a few weeks but didnt and when I found out they just use Green Tea odor control to cover up the toxic odor of the petrochemicals surrounding your body night after night I put it in the garage, threw it up on craigslist and got rid of it for $150... not even close to what I paid for it but at least its out of my life now. I just hope I dont get cancer from this damn experience."

That was my favorite ACTUAL blog about them from an ACTUAL customer of theirs!!! My favorite false claim Keetsa makes about itself is this "Small Carbon footprint" crap they tout. They come from China where they are made with 90% petrochemical, (in God knows what kind of lead-based factory) before being shipped across the ocean to here and shrinkwrapped in tons of plastic. Thats a low carbon footprint?? Because they use a recycled box when they get here and they take up less space when you take them home??? COMPACT Petrochemical mattresses from China are NOT eco-friendly! Keetsa is just great marketing of unhealthy toxic mattresses done through massive guerilla marketing efforts involving its own employees, owners, and board members that pose as customers to the online community. Its entertaining to watch though... go Keetsa go - rah rah rah!!!

Oh come on guys, if keetsa at least saves 10 times more in actually supplying mattresses since they come in a box, that is already 100 times more green than companies who still use diesel trucks to haul their mattresses.

Just think simple, what if you could fit your mattress in a Prius instead of paying or even getting free delivery using a big polluting truck!!! Use your common senses, like your nose plz!
