Keetsa Mattresses

9-12-2007keetsa_ladywithbox.jpgWalking to a meeting in San Francisco last week we noticed the Keetsa Mattress store. Curiosity and Susie's question about foam mattresses compelled us to take a look around.

We didn't know what to expect ... and, 15 minutes later, we walked out seriously impressed.

If all the information in the store and on the web site is accurate, the Keetsa mattress is the greenest we've found.

• Unlike -- well, unlike any other mattress we've ever heard of -- the Keetsa mattress is compressed and rolled into a carton made of recycled cardboard. That means more mattresses can fit in a truck, which means fewer trucks.

• Much of the materials used in the Keetsa mattress are recycled and recyclable. Keetsa even has a Keetsa Quotient, which tells you how recycled/recyclable your mattress is.

• And, according to the salesperson we chatted with, because of the compression that the mattresses go through, most of the toxic off-gassing happens before the mattress enters your home. (Yes, it still happens somewhere, which is still not good.)

They're are also very reasonably priced (and shipping is free!). A queen-sized Keetsa Plus is $499.

We won't be needing a mattress for some time (Keetsa also sells pillows and bedding) but when we do ...

Wow--I am in the market for a mattress right now, and I had not heard of this at all! It is certainly reasonably priced compared to normal and organic mattresses, especially considering the memory foam.

They don't use the word "organic" on their website, though. What do people think about the green health benefits of this vs. the organic latex/organic cotton covered mattresses? One I'm looking at is at Furnature, here in Boston: http://www.furnature.com/natural-rubber.html

The GreenSleep at Furnature looks like a great find also.

One thing, I should have mentioned in this post: Starting next month, Keetsa is going to be covering their mattresses in a bamboo fabric. I don't know if that would affect your decision .. but it is a cool thing to note.

Good luck shopping!

Buyer beware! I would approach their claims with a great deal of skepticism.

Nowhere on the site or in their literature does the company disclose their products' country of origin. A representative at Dwell On Design confirmed it was China.

Transportation impacts should figure into your purchase, especially since they claim a factory-direct business model. Not to mention the product safety and environmental concerns involved with sourcing from China.

Their marketing materials are slickly green, almost preposterously so... green tea in a mattress? Huh? Are we supposed to chew the foam? What, in fact, is the foam made from? I doubt that it is natural latex.

I would like to see this company post a straightforward description of the manufacturing process without all the greenwashing and obfuscation.

Is this product any different from Wal-mart's mattress-in-a-box?

You know, latex isn't all that environmentally friendly. Have you BEEN to the factories that process latex? They are not eco-friendly at all. Latex is perceived only by the public as "eco-friendly" but if you get into it, it's nowhere close to the all the eco-friendliness of a Keetsa mattress. I don't even work there anymore but this is just from my experience. Latex is basically rubber out of tree crap. It's gotta be processed and think about when you burn rubber, is that good for the environment? Latex is an over-priced over-marketed rubber.

So what about the actual mattress? Sleeping on a padding of banana leaves is Green but is it comfortable and supportive?

Green mattress? What exactly does a green mattress mean? I suppose I should pay a visit to that store too, I want to know more about these products.
