Leafing through New York Magazine's Home Design Issue, we waited patiently to stumble upon the token "green" apartment (complete with bamboo floors, CFLs, and maybe even solar panels). Then we hit the last page. Nothing.

Well. Actually ... there was Mark Beard's amazingly thrifted artist loft...


 
 

We love the theory on display here: You don't have to buy a lot of new stuff to have an interesting, beautiful home.

“We inherited a lot of mismatched stuff over the years,” Beard adds, looking around at the console table he found on the Bowery, the couch a friend gave him, the $7 sconces found in Chinatown. “I don’t think any object here cost more than $25.”
