Blogging New York Times: Windmills and Corruption in Upstate New York

Remember the saying, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely"? Apparently it holds true, even when you're talking about wind power.

It saddens us to hear that in Upstate New York, where the wind industry has descended full force, there have been cries of bullying and corruption. When we think wind power, we think "benevolent clean energy" -- sometimes we forget the big money and big companies behind the curtain.

According to an article in the New York Times, some residents in Upstate New York are complaining of being steamrolled as the wind industry hustles to acquire enough land to make real wind power a possibility.

The article notes that the companies are staying away from more affluent communities in New York (like Long Island, where there is plenty of wind) and going straight to poorer regions of the state.

Are you surprised? Or does this sound just as you'd anticipated?

Not in the least bit surprised. Sustainability is all about making those who have the means feel good. The rest are more concerned about survivability.

Not surprised. Just because the energy's clean doesn't mean business practice will be.

I have to say, though, having a turbine blocking your view has got to beat having a nuclear waste 'storage facility' in your area.
