Ever dreamed of living in a prefab home -- all sleek and modern? But then you thought to yourself "I rent and I don't intend to buy, and only homeowners with lots of money get to live in a Glidehouse."
Well, maybe you won't get that Glidehouse; but, if you live in Seattle, you might have the opportunity to rent a prefab apartment.
According to an article in the Seattle Times, developer Unico Properties will be building affordable green prefab apartments on Dexter Avenue North, above Lake Union, in Seattle. A prototype is already on display downtown.
The plans include 62 units with some live/work space, and the building is intended as "work force" housing, just affordable enough for those who make 80 to 120 percent of the median income (not high enough to afford some of Seattle's steep rents, but not low enough to qualify for government subsidies).
This is how we like our affordable housing -- efficient, green, and good looking.

I think it has potential. The Seattle area has lost so many available apartments due to townhome construction and condo conversion that rentals are at a premium. It's a landlord's market and if these do as well as we think they will do, it could help ease things for those who rent. Plus they are kind of cute and easy to put together on available lots. If we truly haven't reached condo saturation yet, I wouldn't be surprised if these start popping up on lots that were originally intended to have new condo construction.
