Blogging SF Chronicle: Green Christmas Trees

11-30-2007tree.jpgWhat do you think? Real vs. fake: Which tree is greener?

Well, as you might have imagined, the question is pretty complicated, and it requires a lot of math, a little guessing, and patience. Lot's of patience. Because, depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers. That's the SF Chronicle's conclusion in their take on the debate.

Each option has it's own pros and cons.

• Artificial trees need no water.
• Some real trees are treated with pesticides.
• Fake trees are made mostly in Japan.

Read the full article for the whole discussion and a few ideas on minimizing the environmental impact of your tree (whether it's fake or real).

I vote for real. You can always find a garden center that'll chip it down for mulch or a friend that needs firewood.

The most interesting way I've heard of to recyle a Christmas tree comes from back home...
Most winters, the ice in Lake Superior freezes thick enough for cars to drive between Madeline Island and Bayfield, Wisconsin. The "safe" path starts out marked by flagged sticks, but after Christmas, people come from miles around and leave their old christmas trees to line the "road".
