Blogging SF Chronicle: Junking Stuff Has Gotten More Complex

3-24-2008junk.jpg

Whether you're starting a Cure, or just starting your Spring cleaning, junk removal can be a pain.

You could sell on Craigslist, give your unwanted things away on Freecycle, or even put a few items out on the curb for passerbys to grab.

But what about the stuff you know is reusable, or recyclable, that you just can't seem to give away? If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you have a lot of options.

According to a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle a number of junk hauling firms in the Bay Area are marketing themselves as environmentally friendly and promising to recycle or find new homes for people's unwanted stuff.

The article is a great resource for companies that can help you responsibly part with your stuff -- but, interestingly, it points out that most regular garbage companies in the Bay Area are already doing a fantastic job recycling and actually recommends private hauling companies only as a last resort.

Read all about it here.

I never thought about a private company although I wonder if it's an option in my area. I recently cleaned out the garage (talk about a headache) and had to sort everything into categories (Freecycle, Goodwill, Recycle, and Craigslist). I never had any luck with Ebay so I don't bother anymore. I thought about maybe trying to sell some it to a consignment store or thrift store but I figure since I don't donate a lot of money to charity that donating some of my stuff especially the nicer things is a good way to balance that out so a lot of stuff went to Goodwill.
