Blogging The Oregonian: On Creating Less Demand

9_19_2007-wastegraph.jpgWe may be recycling more, but we're also buying more... and that means we're throwing out more.

That's the gist of this article in the Oregonian. We especially liked the quote from David Allaway of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality regarding recycling. "'There's a notion that a full recycling bin indicates environmental progress,' he said. 'We'd rather have more in the recycling bin and less in the garbage. But buying large quantities of stuff and recycling it isn't good for the environment.'"

We realized that we have no idea how much we throw out: we haul it to the curb, pay a flat rate, and away it goes. Perhaps if we paid by the pound for garbage, we'd be a bit more aware.

We're wondering: do you have a sense of how much you throw out? Is it more or less than 10 years ago?

This is a telling article right above the OMG It's Totally 'Green' Because It's 100% Recycled! plug for the cork bench.

I know this is a home decor/design blog, thus requiring the occasional product recommendation. But living "green" means buying way, way less.
