As renters, we have very little control over our plumbing. However, if we had our way, the water in our washing machine would definitely be recycled to water the plants in the backyard. Gray water makes perfect sense to us -- and to a lot of people who are taking matters into their own hands (permits be damned).
DIY (and Permitless) Gray Water

One such example is LA Times writer Susan Carpenter. She decided she'd invest a weekend in the Bay Area at a Greywater Guerilla workshop, $312 dollars, and two-days of labor to divert the used water from her washing machine to her yard -- that way, she figured, she could get all the water she needed for her landscape from what she was already using in her home. "In L.A., about 40% of the water used at home is for outdoor irrigation, according to the DWP"
As she explains, the process was not easy, but it was also not impossible.
