The REGREEN residential remodeling guidelines are desinged to help make your home renovation project eco-friendly by addressing the major elements of any green renovation project, including the site of the home, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, material and resources, and indoor environmental
quality. The guidelines blend product selection, building systems integration and proven technologies into a comprehensive plan, and include case studies of actual renovations to inspirehomeowners, designers and builders alike.
Check out the guidelines here and read more about the REGREEN program at the U.S. Green Building Council's website.
The first example of a remodel project in the Guidelines features all new cabinetry made of bamboo and recycled plastic. What about reusing the existing cabinets - reconfiguring, refinishing or refacing them? As per usual with the USGBC, their emphasis is on new green materials and technologies and not on reducing the consumption of newly manufactured items or reusing existing materials.

Actually, their third tip on kitchen furniture and fittings is "Consider reusing clean existing cabinetry or buying salvaged." This guide seems to provide a handy checklist for looking at all different aspects of each room. Will come in very useful in my renovations, thanks!
