Planet Green: Your Thoughts?

6-9-2008-planetgreen.png

Last week on June 4, The Discovery Network launched Planet Green, an all-green, 24/7 television channel.

We were pretty excited about it (or at least curious), so we surfed over to Planet Green's channel finder, found out it's on channel 201 in our neck of the woods, clicked over ... and, of course, we don't get the channel.

Plenty magazine offers a pretty extensive listing of the channel's offerings, plus helpful descriptions (a lot of them sound prett fascinating).

This whole business is being called eco-tainment. The question is: Have you seen any of Planet Green's programming? If you have, which shows are your favorites? And should we call our cable company and invest in one more channel?

I love a lot of the new programming on Planet Green... however, they are almost trying too hard. If 'Alter Eco' was a drinking game where everybody took a drink when someone said the words "eco" or "green"... the party would only last about 5 minutes before everyone was too drunk to play anymore. We get it, your eco and green and cool!

That said, most programs do a great job of showing people that you don't have to be a hippy treehugger to help the environment. You can be a regular person who cares about the environment and have fun at the same time.

I caught an episode of "Wa$ted" and thought it was pretty good. Though most of the things they had the family in the show doing were pretty basic to me (use cloths instead of paper towels, CFL bulbs, turn the lights off when you leave the room) I'm sure there were lots of viewers who didn't know that (at least, I hope they were viewing...). I also liked how they actually measured the money the family saved and the large reduction in their footprint.

The show on after Wa$ted was something about Hollywood stars being green, so I turned it off at that point. I also peeked ahead in the channel guide and saw there were only about 4 or 5 shows playing over several days, so I hope they get some more programming soon.

I totally agree that it seem very "eco 101." Some of the building/remodel shows are cool, as they feature things I haven't already heard of, but for the most part it's just too basic and uses the word "green" far too much. How about "responsible?" I'd like it if the green were just worked into the premises without being the highlight. It seems like a one trick pony.

i think when we complain about this we're forgetting that not all of america is so steeped in green and eco ideas as we, the readers of this blog, are. i get sick of hearing the word "green" too, but i'm also sick of hearing every bedroom on HGTV referred to as a "retreat," that's just tv people trying to be cool.
