StillTasty: The Ultimate Shelf Life Guide

Milk, peanut butter, oil, tomatoes, beans – when do they go bad and what can we do with them before they expire? How should they be stored? Can they be frozen or microwaved? Not knowing the answers to these questions can lead to overflowing cupboards and refrigerators and even worse spoiled food…

StillTasty is a great online resource for the answers to the above questions and more. Just type in a food or beverage in the search bar, and the website will tell how long it will last depending on how it’s stored and give tips on how to keep food fresh and how to use it when it’s ready to be consumed.

For our search we looked up tomatoes – we keep ours in a bowl on the counter, but we know a lot of people who put them in the refrigerator. StillTasty tells us that tomatoes will last longest in the pantry, but can be refrigerated for 2-3 days once ripe. Putting tomatoes in the freezer will keep them for up to two months, but frozen tomatoes will become mushy when thawed and are best used for cooked dishes. They even give instructions on how to best freeze a tomato.

In addition to the Keep It or Toss It? section, there is also Your Questions Answered for specific food questions, and Shelf Talk for food safety and cooking tips.

We’ll definitely be using StillTasty for all our shelf life questions, and this website will be super helpful for the kitchen cleanse during the Apartment Therapy Cure!
