A Rammed Earth House in Wyoming
Natural Home magazine

9-1-2009rammed.jpgWhen we hear the words "rammed earth," our minds immediately conjure up images of hobbit-like houses carved out of hillsides. However, that is definitely not the case with Tom Ward and Katherine Reey's rammed earth house just South of Jackson Hole, Wyoming...

Their home is spacious, and bright, and modern — with clean lines and sharp angles.

As Tom explains, the process of working with rammed earth on his house was "similar to pouring a concrete wall, but instead of concrete, you’re using soil from the site." The walls themselves (18-inches thick) also absorb heat during the day and release the warmth back into the house at night when it's cooler.

See more photos of the home here. And read more about the building process here.
