Best Products: Method Laundry Detergent

11-16-2007method.jpgIt smells so nice.

Because the detergent is concentrated, the bottle is so much smaller than the gigantic vat of Tide we used to lug home from Costco, and it cleans just as many loads.

(From the Method web site: Every year over 400 million gallons of water are wasted to dilute laundry detergents. More water means more plastic wasted on giant plastic bottles that eventually find their way to landfills. Now that's dirty laundry.)

The ingredients are biodegradable and naturally derived.

The stuff really gets our clothes all nice and clean. And, besides ...

We really like Method and what they're all about.

We also like the fact that this is a green cleaning solution targeted to the masses: You don't have to go to a natural grocer to find it (Target carries tons of Method products), it's competitively priced ($8), and there's no sign of Ed Begley Jr., a leaf, a tree, or a planet earth anywhere on the label.

Heck! People who couldn't care less about the environment might actually buy Method detergent by mistake.

We know that there are even greener ways to get the laundry done -- but this stuff is still great because we think we could easily convince our green (but not make-their-own-detergent green) parents to make the switch from their tried and true brand to Method.

Another good detergent to check out - Charlies Soap - http://www.charliesoap.com/

I just started using it and love it. Although it is unscented, but they advertise all you need is the smell of clean clothes. Made locally by a family business in North Carolina - plus free shipping if you can't get it in your state.

Oh yeah - Charlies Soap is also green and all natural. You can get up to 80 loads in one small bag of powder for about $8.

I absolutely love Method products and have been using the laundry detergent and fabric softener. It just makes so much sense! Why dilute the detergent in the big huge bottle when you're pouring it into a washer full of water anyway??

While you can't always find ALL the various Method products at Target, the ones you do find will be cheaper than the website, and occasionally Target has a sale on Method products, too.

I love Method products, and right now they are running a promotion that if you buy more than $20 of their products you get a cute "Plastic Bag Rehab" reusable tote. Mine arrived last week.

But will it clean as well as my Tide? And is it OK in a front-loader? I love Method and use their products, but I'm still a little bitter about an encounter with Ecover, which I found made my clothes look dirtier than when they went in the machine. I've been suspicious of eco-friendly laundry detergents ever since.

I generally like Method products but just switched to a powder that I buy at Trader Joe's because I read powder makes even more sense than concentrated liquid because zero water is being transported, not just a reduced amount. But I'd be interested to know if it powder v. concentrated liquid makes that much of a difference in transportation energy or other environmental costs. Does anyone know? I've been happy with the powdered kind (I'm on my first box) but I have always used liquid and there is something I prefer about it.

I have found Mrs. Meyer's works better detergent-wise than method does. I found a few items that no matter what, Method couldn't get the smell of "nasty several month man not showering in the woods" smell. Mrs Meyers handled it in two washes, compared to Methods...well, too many and still failing.

I looked for the Method detergent yesterday at my local grocer and was sad to not find it (although lots of other Method stuff was there) Someday hopefully!

I love the Method detergent. My roommates griped and said they didn't like how it smells. I guess they want their clothes to smell like a tropical island, not like clean.

You should all try ECOS laundry detergent. It is the best stuff! It cleans so well. As well or better than any other detergent without all the petrochemicals. It truly is ALL natural. I am always Leary of so called natural detergents and ECOS has the ingredients on the back. It also has a soy based softener so no need for softener/dryer sheets.
It is safe for babies and people with sensitive skin and the scent is essential oils. It just smells clean! I have used so many other detergents and now use ECOS. The company is called Earth Friendly Products. They make so many products including Dishmate dish washing liquid. It comes in many natural scents and is so much better than anything else. I use it for hand soap as it doesn't dry out my hands. And it really gets the dishes squeaky clean.
I love these products!
The ECOS is sold in Costco and the other products are in Whole Foods and some regular stores.

I don't know about the nasty-man-in-the-woods-smell. I use their unscented detergent and lavender fabric softener to wash my husband's military uniforms when he comes back from days and nights in the field with no problem.
