Turns out a trick we learned working in retail (lots of windows!) is the best way to clean glass. The New York Times recently tested 20 different window cleaning methods and our retail trick came out on top — the best part is it's non-toxic, low cost and a way to recycle. ... a mixture of white vinegar and water wiped with newspapers:
The one that proved most effective was one part vinegar to two parts of water. It was very runny, though, which meant I had to wipe quickly and vigorously with newspaper. A couple of tablespoons of rubbing alcohol added to the mix boosted its cleaning power and made it evaporate faster.
The New York Times also recommended Greenology as the best non-toxic commercial based organic cleaner. While not tested by the New York Times, our favorite store bought cleaner is the Method Window Wash — paired with a micro fiber cloth it works like a charm. Yeah, the reason it was 'runny' was not the solution, it was the newspaper. It's not very absorbent. Use a microfiber cloth (or other lintless absorbant cloth) and/or a squeegie. Chuck the papers in the recycler.
BTW if you've used commercial window cleaners, they leave a residue on your windows that will streak if you put vinegar on them. Adding a small squirt of dish soap to the solution will take care of that.

For outside windows that get all grimy, I use a small squirt of dish soap in water and a squeegee...
For mirrors and the like indoors, I use just a damp microfiber and another dry microfiber to dry off. seems to work for me.
