My brother, who is in the Peace Corps, recently told me that his bed was missing. Turns out he was airing out his mattress on the roof of his building and it blew away. It was eventually discovered and returned by the embassy building next door, who found his mattress in their garden. I first chalked his story up to another strange third-world adventure, until I started thinking of all the things inside my home that I air out on occasion...

There is really no good place for me to air things outside, so I just open all the windows for a few hours and steam all the carpets.

I air out my duvets and bedcovers, my feather pillows, my feather bed, couch throws. I love how a few hours in the sun and wind will really puff up the feathers. My one neighbor is agast at what I do, she's a big fan of using her electric dryer-all year long. Plus she has her house on the market and on any given sunny spring weekend, you liable to see all my things haning off the clothes line and fence, I think it upsets her!
