Here's a cool way to ditch the waste producing disposable dryer sheets: Take your favourite liquid fabric softener and soak an old hand towel or flour cloth completely with it. Wring it out and let it dry completely, then throw it in with your next load. This mega-fabric softener sheet should be good for at least 40 loads of laundry, stretching out softener use and lessening waste. [via Thrifty Fun]

Or you could just not use fabric softener. That wastes even less.

In the winter, my clothes get a lot of static unless I use fabric softener (during the summer, I don't use any softener at all, and there isn't any static). Any idea what causes this, or how to prevent it? I'd much rather skip the softener all together.

We live in a very static-y house, and have had great luck with plain old white vinegar. We just put a splash (1/4c, maybe?) in the fabric softener dispenser in the washer (or directly into the water at rinse time), and voila! No static. Sometimes the smell bugs me, and then I add a few drops of essential oil.

If you use home made laundry soap (borax bar laundry soap washing soda) you'll get much less static, save a ton of money and see much less wear on your clothes. The sulfates and tough cleaning chemicals in detergent is what makes your clothes staticy and tough.

A little vinegar in a Downy ball is awesome too.
