Simple Green: 5 Ways to Clean Up Your Laundy

atla-070308-laundry.jpgWe hate doing laundry so we put it off and put it off until we have a full load. And we wash everything together in cold water on a short cycle (Even more hateful than laundry is waiting around for it to finish).

Turns out our bad habits may be a good one. Full loads means less frequent washes. Cold water and short cycles means less energy used. And really, despite those scary commercials, it's cold water that is less hard on your stuff meaning it'll stay bright and wearable longer. And you'll have more time for doing the fun stuff that gets your clothes dirty in the first place. Some other ways to turn your laundry green:

  • If you're still using a commercial detergent, switch to something greener. We like Mrs. Meyer's, Method, Seventh Generation and Ecover brands.
  • If you want to take it a step further, try swapping it out for Soap Nuts.
  • If you wash whites separately, try non-chlorine bleach like Oxyboost or Ecover's hydrogen-based bleach. Salt, lemon juice, white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide are other old-fashioned but effective remedies.
  • Instead of a dryer, let your stuff dry naturally on a rack. And nothing beats the smell of laundry dried outside on the line.

I find that if I am hand-washing sweaters, I will start with the lightest (in color) and move to the darker sweaters so that the pigments left in the soapy water don't affect the lighter sweaters. A cap of Woolite will easily clean four sweaters and only takes one sink-full of water.

That doesn't work well for large loads especially if there are small children in the home. We do 2-3 loads weekly just to keep up. I can't imagine what my basement would look life with clothes everywhere day after day after day....

Our laundry is MUCH easier ever since we got our Asko unit. It's a washing machine and dryer in one. I don't have to worry about accidentally forgetting my wet laundry in the wash (and having to do the cycle over because the clothes smell dank). And the best part? it takes LESS energy to wash AND dry our clothes in our asko than in an energy star washering machine.

Soap nuts link works now. I've never used them, but a friend says they work great.
