Simple Green: Wall-Mounted Drying Racks
Hot Post From One Year Ago

Wall-mounted drying racks are a classic small space solution, and air drying is regaining popularity thanks to the significant energy savings you gain from avoiding the electric dryer...

These racks can be hung in a laundry room, bathroom, or even on a porch as an alternative to the clothesline. The one shown above is the Beadboard Drying Rack from Ballard Designs for $199.95.

A few others we like:
Accordion Drying Rack from the Container Store, on sale for $23.99
Accordion Wall Shelf Drying Rack from Gaiam, $76
Tvatta Wall Drying Rack from IKEA, $29.99
Classic Drying Rack from Ballard Designs, $129.95

Ok, very small space dwellers, I love retractable hanging drying racks:

This is what is used in backcountry huts here in Canada (LOTS of wet stuff when skiing in the winter). The plus is that wet stuff also dries faster higher up, since warm air rises.

Does anyone know if these wall mounted racks would work mounted to the ceiling?

Hi,
I remember the last time we had to use drying racks in the 70's hung our clothes in the basement in the winter. I have always used clothes lines in the summer I like them clothes smell fresh. Some parts of cities will not allow clothes lines. They look bad.

It's interesting seeing that each price increased since then.

We built our drying rack into a 8'-wide window frame. The top is hinged so that the rack can flip up and attach to 2 little hooks on the ceiling. When not in use, we close it up and cover with sheer curtains. This solution accommodates nearly 2 full loads of wet laundry, which is great for a 3rd floor apartment!

I have had three drying racks for twentynine years, so this is not new to me. Just did a load an hour ago and it is now drying in the basement. I will be moving soon and will be using them in our new apartment on the third floor porch.
