Earlier this year Idaho-based small business, Scentsy, celebrated its 5th Anniversary by giving its employees $100,000 to spend at 40 family-owned businesses nominated by employees. The event was so successful that Scentsy is taking the idea beyond their company and community and are now urging people to take action in their own community starting today…
The goal is to inspire 100,000 people to spend an extra $50 at locally owned businesses on or after October 12, 2009. If it’s a success the event will result in a $5 million economic stimulus in communities across the nation.

Spending in your local community, rather than a chain or big box business, will not only improve the local economy but also be less demanding on the environment with decreased energy consumption. Visit Scentsy's Contribute 2009’s website for more information and pledge to spend $50 at your local business today or sometime this week.

This is a heart wonderful idea and I would love to see someone create a website that allows people to enter the store they spent their $50 at so community members can see the direct impact this "think local" focus has on their individual cities/regions. I'm going to work on doing something similar at my own company.
