Concept: Solar Powered Coffee Machine

solar_coffee_sz_080909.jpg Sure, it would be great if all our homes were juiced via solar panels, but since a lot of us rent and we can only demand so much from our landlords, we have to make do with what we've got. One way to keep your electrical use to a minimum is to buy energy efficient gadgets and appliances, and you can't get more energy efficient than with a gizmo with its own solar panels...

This coffee machine by Gun ho Lee features it's own solar panels so it can soak up rays from your kitchen window to be used the next morning when brewing your cup of Joe.

As far as we can tell, this is just a concept, but we hope that Braun or Krups take this idea into consideration.

This would need a very long time in the sun to store enough energy (in a battery) to make a single cup of coffee-- espresso machines typically use >1KW of power when heating. A solar panel of that size would likely only produce 1 or 2 watts.

It would be great if all designers had friendly neighborhood engineers to consult with about ideas like this-- this is science fiction.
