Fishing in the City: Boston Ponds Stocked for the Season!
Boston

2009-04-16-BostonFishing.jpgBostonians, you don't have to travel far from home if you'd like to do a little fishing this summer! Many lakes and ponds right in the city are annually stocked with fish by the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife - all you need is a fishing pole, some bait, and a license. Do you have a favorite Boston-area fishing hole?

2009-04-16-BostonFishing2.jpgWe were walking around Jamaica Pond last week and happened to witness the pond getting restocked for the season. We wished we'd had our camera with us to capture the big trucks backing up to the water and all the fishermen (and more than a few women!) from the neighborhood eagerly spanned along the shore with their lines already in the water.

Fishing licenses are required for anyone over the age of 15. The license costs $27.50 and is good for an entire year. Here's where to go:

We had trouble finding information about which Boston-area ponds get stocked and what exactly they're stocked with. The MassWildlife site has some information, but it seems more geared toward professional anglers and state parks than the smaller city ponds:

I'm not from Mass., but I work with the Ohio division of Wildlife - in fisheries research specifically. While division of wildlife websites are often for the 'big-timers', a simple phone call will get you a ton of information. DOW personel could tell you just about anything about any body of water in any part of the state.
