Food Storage: Swapping Plastic for Glass

glass100508.jpgThanksgiving leftovers have never had it so good. We spotted these glass containers in our friend's fridge, and all we can say is: move over plastic, these are for both storing and serving.

These vintage glass storage containers have tight-fitting lids, so leftovers keep.

While plastic might be nice for something you can grab from the fridge and take with you, with these you won't have to dirty another bowl when you put leftovers away. Plus, we love that these have lasted for fifty years! (Try that with your Gladware.) We're definitely going to keep an eye out for some like this--whether it's vintage or a new design.

Martha Stewart makes these for KMart. They are listed as "refrigerator dishes" and they have a couple different sizes. I saw them just a few days ago and was planning on picking some up in the near future.

Pyrex used to make these, a set had a large dish, a long thin dish that was about half the width of the large dish, and two small square dishes half the length of the long dish. The three smaller dishes nested on top of the large dish. Really awesome. There's a goodly amount of them on ebay, and you can get really nice colors and patterns, but the shipping is a killer since they're so heavy.

Good for Martha for bringing them back.

Ikea had a large selection the last time I was there, but that was back in July. Antique stores often have sets of the Pyrex.

My mom has a bunch of them. Hers are from the Crate & Barrel outlet store where they were about a $1.50 each.

I've had a lot of luck finding the vintage Pyrex ones AddiPi describes at thrift stores -- usually individually and mostly the small ones. The lids don't really fit so snugly that they're air tight, but the glass lids are heavy enough it does fine for a few days.

MAN now I want to go to KMart and spend money. Of course Martha Stewart sells them - she always finds these great niches. :-)

I have a mix of vintage and modern pyrex and some Corningware. The lids are plastic but they seal better. I don't think I'll completely switch out because of the cost but I like having options.
