Organic Frozen Entrees: A Healthier Choice or Just Another TV Dinner?

We've gotten into cooking a lot more recently, but sometimes after a late night at the office, we'll pull out an Amy's frozen pizza. We rationalize that they're cheaper and quicker than takeout... but is it really just another TV dinner?

We had stopped eating packaged frozen food for the most part a few years ago, but we've been swayed by the organic high fiber or whole wheat frozen "entrees." Kashi dinners aren't too high in sodium, and we think Annie's pizzas are pretty tasty. Plus, there's no waiting for a delivery guy, and we know we won't wind up dropping $20 on dinner.

But as a health rule, ordering Thai take out from the restaurant down the block, we know we're going to have fresh vegetables, plus we can usually save half for lunch the next day. And of course, then we're supporting a local business and the delivery guy comes on bicycle.

What do you think?

Just another TV dinner, no matter how good the ingredients are. Healthier to make extra portions at home and save in smaller portions to eat later.

Frozen foods take a LOT of energy to produce. Chances are that carton had to be shipped in a freezer truck from miles away, then kept in the freezer in the store for a while. The packaging is also energy absorbent, as is the processing of the food. It's better to buy a pizza at your local pizzeria (if you have one) and give the local business a boost.

I wish Amy's would develop heating/cooking instructions that, when followed, actually resulted in hot food. I've used different ovens and microwaves, and their times (or temperatures?) are always ridiculously low.

i think they're healthier than other tv dinners.

in a pinch, i would opt for them, also. if i'm going to break my 'no processed foods' rule, i at least want to avoid some of the junk that is in most of them.

lesser of two evils, i suppose.

yes, of course, but i'm not perfect nor do i want to be. and if i'm splurging on frozen pizza, i'd rather have the ingredients in this: http://www.amys.com/products/product_view.php?id=191 than this: http://brands.kraftfoods.com/DiGiorno/main.aspx?s=product&m=product/Product_display&Site=1&Product=7192100333

I get a spinach and feta pocket once in a while. Sure, I try to avoid premade foods, but it's nice to have organic options during that proverbial blue moon. And they sure taste better than other frozen junk.

I know making my own is healthier and more economical overall, but I can help but need things every now and then that make my life easier while remaining as healthful as possible. TJ's, Amy's frozen options are a good alternative to the norm.

Just another TV dinner. The sodium content in Amy's stuff really surprised me when I looked at the label. Eeeeep!

I realize cooking a meal takes a bit of time, but with some organization and prep you can make cooking less involving and painless by freezing in advance or using a Crockpot.

I rely on these for a quick lunch sometimes. My office is nowhere near any food options and I hate to cook. When I can, I bring leftovers or lunch instead.

The problem arises when you start kidding yourself that processed organic is healthy and better for you than other foods and you allow yourself to eat it more often. I understand there are times when you need something fast and dirty (I had a frozen Trader Joe's pizza last night) but those times should be few and far between.

Amy's is the best choice for a vegetarian with little time. I looooove their pizzas which are certainly better than white crust, gooey cheesy takeout pizzas. About the same cost though as I easily eat one on my own and my boyfriend might devour 2 or 3 if I let him...
I also like their canned Chili and no-chicken noodle soup for those cold winter days when I just can't cook. I estimate it to be better than the standard student's Kraft dinner & Pizza pockets diet...
I also don't like microwaves, so I try to get things (like the Amy's pizza) that I can cook in the oven.

I really want pizza now....
