Our boyfriend's mother, a seltzer water addict, recently did something about all those plastic bottles: she got herself an old school seltzer bottle.
We prefer carbonated to flat water, but since we live in the city and don't drive, having to carry home the heavy bottles is deterrent enough.
So when we spotted her contraption, which takes refillable CO2 cartridges and glass bottles, we couldn't help but start thinking of the cost-savings, the benefits of no more plastic bottles, and not having to lug home any heavy jugs.
These are just a sampling of the cool, retro ones available at Praire Moon.
I'm not really sure how economical this is - $60 for the bottle, then $50 for 10 CO2 chargers, plus shipping for the chargers if you can't find them at a local store. Soda water costs $.79/1 liter at my bodega and we return the bottles to get recycled and get the deposit back. This site has a better option http://www.sodaclubusa.com/default.htm.

Actually, the seltzer chargers are $50 for 100 chargers--the 10 pack is ten packs of 10 chargers. So it's 50 cents per liter, roughly. Ordering a 10 pack of chargers cuts down the shipping cost, and where I live, we get no deposit back for plastic bottles. The added bonus is that we always have seltzer on hand without having to run to the store or remember to add it to the grocery list.

This idea is intriguing to me. I love bubbly water but steer away from it because of the bottle that is not re-used, it is only recycled. I'll get a bottle of bubbly as an extreme treat even though I would drink it all the time if my conscious was cool with it. Definitely something I'll look into.

I have the SodaClub machine and it is very simple to use, very economical, and allows for bottles of seltzer to be easily stored and served without hassle. We haven't bought any seltzer or soda since.

We'd been feeling kinda smug about our chain-mail girded seltzer bottle. Then we met our friends' SodaClub machine. Not so stylin', maybe, nor as deadly in a food fight, but you can fill multiple bottles at once!

"our boyfriend's mother......" What? Why the use of the first person plural?
We have a hard time reading your most interesting site because the strange use of the first person plural puts us off. We wonder: is there a better way?

The editorial "we" makes sense when it can sensibly be replaced by "We here at Apartment Therapy...."
"We here at AT love this cute little table" makes sense. "We here at AT went to our boyfriend's house" does not.
