This vase was made from an ordinary BIC pen heated to the point where the plastic becomes malleable. It is then hand blown in the same fashion as glass to produce a little bubble for the water/base of the vase.
Something tells me I wouldn't want to be around to smell the fumes produced by this process. Created from designers Jess Giffin and Jim Termeer and available at DesignBoom.com.

This is going to sound truly awful, but this sort of looks like some sort of bong to me.
But the shape is neat!

I was just going to say the same thing. A recycled Bic bong.

I was thinking along the lines of crack pipe/bong as well. It's a neat idea, but Penn & Teller have made me skeptical of recycling anything except for metal.

My thoughts also, looks similar to a crack or bong pipe, oops.

I think the recycling part is great, but how many vases do we need made out of recycled stuff? Has anyone else notices this proliferation of vases from waste? What I really love is when they take plastic water bottles and turn them into playground equipment or fluffy pullovers (my son had one and it was great). No more vases, please!

Aww, keep the vases coming. The gardeners among us always need more vases! This is just "wow" as far as I'm concerned. Recycled but chic! Who knew...

lovely vases! But where can we use them?

I like, but 3 things...
1. I agree...it TOTALLY looks like a bong!
2. Worried about the fumes that would be sent out into the atmosphere, when heated...like OP said.
3. If you bought the pens for the sheer purpose of making these, how would you repurpose the ink inside?
