The SmogShoppe, an event space in LA (used for weddings, movie screenings, and the like) was a former smog-check station before Sherry Walsh and Miguel Nelson transformed it.
Salvaged Design Ideas from the SmogShoppe

All sorts of salvaged pieces from the old shop were reused in the funky renovation of the venue. The space is full of ideas that we'd love to steal for our home. And luckily, the LA Times has a full slideshow highlighting the some of the SmogShoppe's cooler, more DIY/creatively reused features.
For example, lumber from the old shop was used to build a gigantic outdoor table and bench seating (which can also be used as a stage), and an old storage shelf from the original shop is now used as a bookshelf and shows off all sorts of interesting vintage and salvaged finds.
The Shoppe also uses reclaimed rainwater and solar power for 100% of their electricity.
