Black and Decker Lights Out AutoSwitch

2008_10_27-auto-lights.jpgNot the prettiest light switch we have ever seen, but we can definitely get behind the idea of saving electricity while minimizing the effort to do so. Targeted for homeowners that are not comfortable or interested in dealing with wiring, the Lights Out AutoSwitch by Black and Decker turns any light switch into an automatic one if you are able to turn a screwdriver.

The good:

  • Super easy install. You don't even have to take the switch plate off.

  • You can adjust how long it takes before the light switch turns off. 1, 5, 15 or 30 minutes.

The bad:

  • It's cumbersome and bulky looking.

  • Because it doesn't get wired up it needs 3AA batteries to work. Kind of defeats the purpose.

  • Only works on toggle type switches. If you have the decora style flat switches, then you are out of luck

So in other words this is for people too lazy to just turn off the damn light when they leave a room? To me gadgets like this are the opposite of being green. It just encourages people to buy more stuff instead of changing their behaviour.

Actually, I do see a use for this in my house...dark garage my forgetful husband. (need some light to get to car) But, I would definitely use re-chargeable batteries.

Changing the behavior is great, but sometimes that just doesn't happen. If you're like me and live in a rental with other people, the money spent on this would avoid annoying arguments about the electric bill.
