Energenie: Energy Saving for the Lazy

2008_08_28 energinie.jpgWe have seen things like the Belkin Conserve which are designed to help you eliminate vampire power. The idea is to provide an easy way of fully disconnecting devices without having to crawl behind furniture to actually disconnect them. Problem is, people are lazy, and this still requires a conscious effort to make sure that all your devices have been fully switched off. The Energenie isn't as polite.

When it is connected to your electronics, the Energenie switches off the source power after 2 minutes of standby. Once it's off, it's off, and you have to press the green reset button on the Energenie to restore power to your devices. This could get really irritating for things like TV's and DVD players which are tucked away in cabinets. It's too bad that this couldn't be controlled by universal remote controls like the harmony so that it would just become part of the overall power on sequence.

Currently only available for UK outlets, but you can get it here for £12.99.

I am ashamed of the electronic companies (of tv's, dvd players, etc) that insist on a design to suck up power even when their product is "off".
