Lukas Petrash was only 23 years old when he built this 484 square foot house for $24,500 in response to a challenge given by the president of the Sustainable Builder's Guild in Huntsville, Texas. For example, the refrigerator (which produces heat) was placed in one corner of the house, in an exposed stairwell made of pallets; part of the deck surrounds a shade-producing tree; and, water from the bathroom sinks runs through filtration pipes to the planter.
