Whoa, when people say the Playstation 3 is a supercomputer, I don't think they were meaning to refer to its power consumption requirements. But a study released by consumer group Choice found that Sony's powerhouse machine "would cost almost... five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period," when left on while not in use! Other top culprits out of 16 electronic devices tested include Microsoft's Xbox 360 and plasma television sets...
We keep our Apple TV, Xbox 360 and Wii completely unplgged when not in use, hoping it makes a little bit difference in energy use (and our bills), alongside unplugging everything when we travel for any longer than a day. It's amazing how much energy is being slowly used by all the appliances and gadgets in the home. It might be an interesting experiment to compare and contrast one month with everything always plugged in and one month with things only plugged in for use [CFL idea bulb turning on].

i bought a smart strip from amazon to deal with our vampire power issues. it is designed to completely cut power to dependent devices (in our case, dvd player, the wii & the xbox 360) when the master (the tv) is turned off.
yes, i know it's a little wasteful for the xbox 360 to be in standby mode while we're watching a dvd, but we don't tend to have the tv on very often & for the convenience, it's well worth it.
the smart strip also has some dedicated "always on" outlets that we use for our mac mini, modem, and airport.
