Carpet made from recycled plastic bottles seems like a logical step (see these rugs made from recycled plastic bottles) in recycled materials but carpet made from corn?

The process isn't so simple and with the ethanol boom/concerns over increased corn prices, it may not be as environmentally sound as other options - but it is good to see green innovation. Basically, fully matured corn is harvested, the sugar extracted, and then fermented. The end product is turned into a renewably sourced polymer and spun into carpet fiber. Supposedly it takes 30 percent less energy to make when compared with nylon but is made from more natural sources. Priced at $16 / square yard, it's quite expensive but for those who need carpet that must be green, it is an option.

From their Web site:

• The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon.
• Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona® are 63 percent lower than nylon manufacturing.
• This energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.
