Evolve: The Intelligent Showerhead

121108-evolve-showerhead.jpgWhat is your morning shower routine? Does it sound anything like this:

  • Stumble into the shower half asleep

  • Get the water running

  • Stick your toe or hand under aforementioned running water until it gets to the right temperature

  • Continue to wait until running water gets to the right temperature

  • Finally duck under the shower head after brushing your teeth, making your bed, maybe even checking your email?

Not a good routine for saving water, that's for sure, and this is where Evolve is trying to do it's green part.

With a showerhead that basically purges the line of cold water and then stops the flow once it reaches ideal shower temperature, in this case 95 degrees, no "good" shower water is wasted and you can keep your morning multitasking routine intact. According to the company:

Using an evolve showerhead can save a yearly average of 2,700 gallons of water, the fossil-fueled energy it takes to heat it—and up to $75 off your utility bill.

Hmm, do you buy it? Would this improve your morning? Check out a demo video here.

So I don't own the Evolve, but my cheapy water saving shower head used to do the same thing (Before it got a crack and had to be replaced) but by accident - it wasn't marketed as doing so.

As long as I don't turn the pressure up too high, as soon as the water gets hot enough to be comfortable, it turns down to a trickle - turning up the pressure slightly had it back at a comfortable stream.

I thought it was a great feature, and loved the fact that while brushing my teeth, I could be alerted to when it was time to hop in.

I don't pay for the hot water - thankfully - because I have to wait at least 10 minutes before anything resembling warm water comes out of the shower. I know it's an awful waste, but there's no way I'm showering in cold water in the middle of winter in Canada.

All the cold and not quite hot enough water goes in a bucket I keep in the shower. I use that water for cleaning and/or watering my container garden.

ange_lune would need a really, really big bucket!

I wash my face, shave and brush my teeth before I shower to utilize the cold water being purged from my hot water pipes.
Of course, I wouldn't be able to do that without the wall heater next to the bathroom sink keeping me toasty warm.
