WASARA of Japan is a collection of biodegradable paper tableware that is simply beautiful. Elegant flowing forms are made sustainable bamboo, reed, bamboo and bagasse (sugarcane waste) pulp.

Available at Branch, the exclusive U.S. distributor of WASARA, the line of one-time-use tableware includes kaku and maru plates, compote bowls, and unique cups and serving trays.

Made from bamboo and reed which are naturally sustainable, and bagasse (sugarcane waste) pulp which is the waste produced after extracting juice from sugar cane, these single-use plates are oil- and water-resistant suitable for cold or hot foods, and are beautifully packaged.

This is beautiful design. I can't imagine throwing any of these away when I was done with my snack...

i've been looking into alternative dishware for summer bbqs, and wasara is an excellent option. although a little on the $$ side for disposable piece, they are gorgeous so i can justify it. one thing i was worried about, tho, was responsible manufacturing of these pieces. i didn't see much info on the site about the manufacturer practices.

i reached out to branch, and Roberto (Vice President Business Manager) got back to me saying, "the facility where (wasara) is produced, in Shanghai, is both ISO 9001:2000 and 1400:20041 certified. The specifics of the process are proprietary but at a high level the process is designed to be zero-waste and is a closed loop that reuses both water and excess material (in essence the paper stock which is created from a combination of reed, bamboo, and bagasse)."

good to know!
