Organic Dairies Hit by Recession
The New York Times 5.28.2009

6-2-2009cows.jpgAs this recession continues to seriously affect families and individuals, we're seeing more and more how it impacts spending habits. People must be cutting back. But where are they doing it? Apparently, one place is in the milk section of the grocery store. Fewer people are buying organic milk these days, and it's hurting organic dairy farms...

According to an article in the New York Times, sales on organic dairy products were going gang busters a few years ago. Conventional dairies switched to organic practices and saw their sales jump tremendously.

Unfortunately, as the recession hit, many families have seen organic milk as an expense they can cut out of their budget. In fact, according to the article, sales of organic food in general has slowed considerably after years of tremendous growth. But no one is being hit harder than organic dairy farmers.

It's sad to hear. We've yet to cut any organics from our shopping list, but we also haven't been hit by the recession the way some people have. Are you skipping on organics these days to save money?

I eat a great many foods that are not organic. However, the first switch to organic that I made was dairy. If I have to cut back, it will be the last switch back that I make.

However, I have to say that if I lived in Hawaii, I wouldn't be able to afford organic dairy at all.

We're actually trying to find ways to keep the organic stuff. Joining CSA's, getting veggie boxes delivered, buying grassfed beef from the farmer. It's pricey, but even in these economic times, we feel like it's a long term investment in our health.

I agree with katenonymous - organic milk is the last to go. It tastes so good - there is no substitute. And the way we drink milk, would have thought we were propping up the entire organic milk industry ourselves, guess we need to buy more.

I agree, I made the switch to organic milk about a year ago and I'm not going back. I'll drop cable before I drop my milk!

Ditto ditto.

It was the first thing we switched and organic dairy would be the last thing to go.

isn't this a good thing? this will force organic farmers to lower their prices, bringing them closer to the non-organic milk prices. then why not buy organic if it costs the same amount?

I just recently switched to everything organic. Organic milk is amazing. I will never go back to regular. Fat free organic tastes so much richer than regular skim. I made my parents try some while they were visiting me, and my dad didn't believe me that it was fat free and wanted to see the carton, ha!
