Who doesn't love freshly laundered sheets. They might even help you sleep better. But with an Energy Star rated machine using 18-25 gallons of water per load (compared with 40 for standard machines) and the use of chemical detergents, it's not exactly easy on the environment. So two questions: How often do you wash your sheets and is there a way to keep sheets smelling fresh for more than a couple days?
Obviously different circumstances, habits and personal preferences will result in different laundering habits.
For example, showering before bed could certainly prolong time between sheet laundering, while having your pup join you each night could necessitate twice-weekly laundering.
A couple ideas for prolonging time between washing - would any of these work?
- Using a Febreze-like product. See link for ideas about Febreze.
- Use a eco-friendly or DIY-laundry sheet.
- Air out sheets during the day (a great excuse for why you forgot to make the bed, right?)

Fully air the sheets for an hour in the morning. Throw all the blankets on the floor and flip the top sheet over all the way off the end of the bed. Make the bed if so desired.

Make up the bed every morning, instead of leaving it in a heap. Not that I always do.
Also, I would bet that showering at night before bed (instead of in the morning--you can't have both!) would really help prolong freshness.

Change the pillowcases more often.
Do not make the bed right away in the morning. Let the sheets air out. But DO make the bed, afterwards.
Shower at night.

Husband and I have long been night-bathers, which prolongs the life of the sheets, and we don't have elaborate bedding so it is easy to throw back the top and let it air out. We don't tuck in the top sheet either (free the Toes!), which makes it easier to deal with the bedding. And I like a fresh pillow slip every 2-3 nights.
Febreze gives me the worst headache ever.

My goal is to wash the sheets every week, but reality is more like every other week.
I am too sweaty of a person to get away with showering at night only. Since I am also not a morning person, I envy those who can.
When I wake up, I fold the top sheet down to the bottom of the bed to let it air out while I shower and get ready. Sometimes I turn on the fan to expedite the sheet-drying. I make the bed right before I walk out the door. I also usually smack the pillow a few times to make sure it is back to its normally fluffy state. I change the pillowcases every few days.

I shower at night, let my sheets air out a bit, and try to make the bed (try being the key word) to at least give the allusion of freshness. I also take a lint brush to the sheets now and then to get stray fur from kitty cuddling.
