While this might not be the most elegant solution, it serves two purposes: blocks weeds and utilizes something that otherwise gets thrown out (recycled). I've seen another neighbor doing this but not only were they using cardboard, they had a piece of old carpet thrown down as well.
After putting down the cardboard and getting it wet, it does a pretty good job of keeping down the weeds. I'm adding pieces of cardboard as we have them to recycle. Eventually, I plan on putting a different material over the cardboard, such as gravel or mulch, but in the meantime, it keeps grass and weeds away from the perimeter of our vegetable garden.

we use this method as well. our garden is large enough to place a layer of cardboard between our vegetable rows inside the garden. if you want a more attractive view try laying down the cardboard and covering it with mulch or straw. a friend of ours uses straw and it looks great. we're going to try the mulch option because we think it's more attractive.

I use a couple of layers of newspaper and cover it with mulch. My neighbors wonder why I never have to weed my flower beds!

The vinegar plus dish soap, etc., will only kill SOME weeds, not many, in my experience.
