While we're hoping that our own container garden produces more than just one pepper this summer, we are bracing for an onslaught of tomatillos (which were lucky enough to get a spot in the ground rather than a pot). And still, we doubt we'll have any kind of a surplus. You might find yourself in the same boat, hoping that someone with a more productive garden will see fit to make you a beneficiary. Those people like my mother, who has upwards of 20 raised beds, have more food than they know what to do with...

I'd learn how much I can freeze or can, personally. So much produce loses taste and nutritional value the longer it sits around.

I strongly encourage people who have surplus produce from their gardens to donate it to local food pantries. Fresh fruits and vegetables are nearly impossible for families who need to utilize food pantries to get.
